This is my first sculpture. Fantastic medium. I've been drawing and redrawing my character since 2001 at least. Now, for the first time, I get to see my character in 3 Dimensions. It was trying at times, because I found that drawing shadows is sometimes very different than actually trying to construct the shape that creates the shadows. Although the statue is over 18 inches tall, the head is only a couple of inches tall. Cut that in half, and that is what space you have to work with to create the nose and mouth. Then you have to create the eyes. There are several 'leather' straps (made of clay) wrapped around the sword, these were especially difficult to paint around. Here are the main steps.
This is literally my first blog. So I'll start with my first drawing. No, it is not the first time that I've picked up a pencil. But it is the oldest one that I can think of out of the ones that I have here. I used to draw on my plane trips between places. Since I used to think that I could only operate on adrenaline, the challenge would be to start and finish the drawing before the flight was over.
